In Nederland houdt een handjevol hedendaagse kunstenaars zich intensief bezig met maritieme schilderskunst. De meesten van hen doen de zee er echter bij. Zij wisselen hun belangstelling voor maritieme onderwerpen af met aandacht voor andere thema's of genres. Schilder JOHANNN VAN DEN NOORT (Kampen 1940) heeft zijn oeuvre onlosmakelijk verbonden met zijn band met de zee. Hij neemt alleen om die reden al een bijzondere positie in binnen de hedendaagse schilderkunst. Maar er is meer. Niet alleen het feit dat hij gedreven wordt door de zee, vooral ook de manier waarop hij die passie vorm en inhoud geeft, maakt hem tot een kunstenaar die een eigen plaats heeft veroverd in de hedendaagse schilderkunst. JOHANNN VAN DEN NOORT beheerst vele technieken in de beeldende kunst: olieverf schilderen, aquarelleren, gouache, verschillende grafische technieken, ceramiek en beeldhouwen. Zijn totale oeuvre omvat meer dan 3000 werken. Er zijn veel publicaties van hem voor radio en TV, kunsttijdschriften, kranten en catalogi. Het meeste van zijn werk bevindt zich in belangrijke kunstcollecties over de hele wereld. In 2005 ontving hij voor zijn totale oeuvre de koninklijke onderscheiding van " Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw"
